Merry Christmas Friends!
So I'm a little late getting to this post -- business as usual as far as my blog is concerned :) I have a lot of goals written down for 2012, but not one of them includes this blog. Why? Because whenever I've made promises regarding my sweet blog in the past I've failed miserably. I've blog failed, so to speak. I figure if I, henceforth, have no expectations for this online diary situation I can't really let anyone, or myself, down. Sure, sure, I'd love to be the Pioneer Woman or Dooce of Seattle, but that just isn't in the cards. For one, my cooking and photography skills are crap compared to most bloggers I follow. And two, most bloggers I follow work from their home so they seem to be able to squeak in some blog time inbetwixt tending to their career and family duties. I should probably quit my job so I can blog more.
Onward! Christmas 2011 flew by like bird shit with Paul Newman's face on it. If you've never heard that saying before then you obviously are not a Pauly Shore fan. I wouldn't call myself a fan, per se, but I'm familiar with his work. He released a comedy album in the 90's that remained on repeat in my life for a good year. Gina knows what I'm talking about -- we had that whole album memorized. Anywho, what I'm saying is Christmas came and went, quickly. The swiftness of it's presence was not lengthened any by the fact that I had to work the day before and the day after Christmas. The holidays are just not the same when you are a single adult. My days run together, but I'm cool with it. I'm sure if I had some sprouts running around I'd discover the magic of Christmas again. But my womb is a barren and rocky place, where no seed has found purchase. So basically what I'm saying is Christmas can suck on deez n-u-teez.
With that said, I got some pretty bomb stuff this Christmas. Here's a breakdown of this year's spoils.
Cricut cartridge holder. Perfect for the scrapper on-the-go. And one of my goals for 2012 is to scrap more! So this will be a useful tool when scrappin' at another location. Each slot holds the key pad, cartridge, and booklet. It's purdy cool. Thanks Gina!
The Hunger Games books. Since these suckers came out I've heard nothing but positive praise about them. Another of my goals for 2012 is to read one book per month. I used to read a bunch when I was younger, and for some reason I got out of the reading habit a few years ago and have been missing those stories. 2012 is going to be my book nerd year. And The Hunger Games books will fill up 3 of those 12 spaces. I'm hoping I actually read more than a book each month, but again, I don't like setting unrealistic goals for myself. I'm working on trying to read more pre-sleep. I think I'll be able to bust out some serious stories as a before bed ritual. Thanks for the books, Paula!
As most of you know, I had to have my gall bladder removed in the spring of 2010. Although I am super pumped to never experience a gall stone attack again, I do miss the role my gall bladder played in the digestion of food. For those of you that don't know what the gall bladder does, I'll drop a knowledge bomb on you, right here, right now. The gall bladder is a holding tank for bile, the liquid that helps your body break down fats. My doctor described bile as a Dawn soap of sorts. Breaks down grease, works great on stains. Well, breaks down fats mostly. Anyway, without that holding tank for the bile, my liver is constantly dribbling out bile. This constant dribble makes my digestion somewhat unpredictable. I live in constant fear of going boom boom in my pants (only partially true), and I've heard stories from other people regarding their unpredicable digestion after gall bladder removal. Stories that make you want to carry an extra change of clothes with you everywhere, as if you are an infant. Pretty attractive, huh? Please contact me if you'd like me to go into great detail regarding my unpredictable digestion, then we can make out and feel eachother private parts, over our clothes of course. Where am I going with this story? Big sister got me a new gall bladder for Christmas!!
It doesn't really function quite as well as a real gall bladder, but she didn't have to kill anyone for it. And it isn't suffering from chronic infection like mine was prior to removal. You too can buy yourself an organ if you visit the I Heart Guts website! My sister and Mike also got me some other bad ass swag. Check out these coasters!
No longer am I worrying about damaging my mahogany furniture pieces (everything sounds more expensive when you refer to it as a "piece" unless of course you're referring to it as a "piece" of shit) with Cristal overflowing the sides of my diamond encrusted champagne flutes. In true Hilton Sister fashion, we both got eachother a mix-n-match set of these coasters from the same vendor at this year's Urban Craft Uprising. We also got eachother necklaces from the same vendor. Silly sisters! We must have been birthed out of the same vagina!
My necklace, as you can see, is birds. The one I purchased for Chris was a deer. She's a sucker this season for deer. The lovely artist can be found at Fernworks.
Some gorgeous prints by Rachel Ann Austin. I've been eyeing her work at the last few Urban Crafts, so I'm happy Chris sprung for them. Now I just need to get them framed and I'll be set! My plan is to put them up in my office / scrapbooking space, which I hope to revamp in 2012 (another thing on my list of shit to get done in 2012 -- busy year folks!).
Spuzz was not left out of the Christmas spirit! Chris and Mike got him this Oh! Nooooo! stuffed toy. I can't help but laugh whenever I look at it. It looks like it has the mouth of a blow-up doll. Spuzz doesn't seem to notice or care. He packs it around like all his other toys. Although his mouth isn't big enough to squeeze it's mid-section to make the Oh! Nooooo! sound play. I have to do that part for him. It's a big job, but he's my lil' guy!
What would Christmas be without buying a few presents for yourself, right? I've been big in to different types of tape and stamps for my scrapbooking and Smash booking stash. I found these gems one day at Anthropologie when I was checking out all the clothes that I can't fit my fat fanny in. Anthropologie needs to look into making clothes for the more curvaceous female. I'm sure I'm not the only mid-30's woman with an ass that looks like a bag of wet clothes that is willing to burn $175 on a pair of vintage inspired denim sailor pants.
Hope your Christmas was fantastic!

Merry Christmas 2009!!!
Remember when you were a kid and Christmas was all about the presents? I always remember going back to school after Christmas break and talking to all my friends about what we all got for Christmas. Whadja get? Whadja get? Am I the only one that remembers doing that? Do I remember any present I got when I was a kid other than my first camera in 9th grade? Absolutely not.
Here are some of the various items I was lucky enough to receive this year......
Edward Cullen fleece blanket, thank you New Jack Weenie / White Elephant Extravaganza 2009. Thank God I didn't open the box with the butt plug buried beneath the mound of creepy vintage inspired dolls. Ugh. And yes, Casey, he does resemble Sloth from Goonies in that picture. Actually, not even close. He's beautiful.
My cousin Fran made me the quilt below. She lives in Missouri, and made this quilt for me as a Thank You for the scrapbook I made her Mom and Dad for their wedding anniversary in June. Its kind of a patchwork denim quilt with plaid flannel backing. Totally love it because it is homemade and from the heart, the best kind of gift. And look at my Mom, she's so wee. Have I ever told you that she represents the Lollipop Guild?
Below you will find the bounty of gifts given by Gina and Paula. Good stuff! Can't wait to crack everything open and put them to use! Paula came through with the Dymo Caption Maker that has been on my Christmas list the last two years. And a gift card to World Market and some Bliss products! Love it! I've been super in to Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers lately, ever since I watched the 4 & 1/2 hour documentary Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers: Runnin' Down a Dream a few months ago. Tom Petty is a genius. Anyway, Gina got The Live Anthology, which I am totally stoked about. She also got me an awesome book, Seattle's Best Dive Bars, which I think I'm going to turn in to a fun activity for 2010. The activity will be something along the lines of how many of the dive bars can me and my friends hit up in 2010? Who's with me? Thanks for the awesome gifts Paula and Gina!
Carol has made me different Santa Claus inspired crafts every year for the past, probably, 16 years. Carol is the reason I have Christmas decorations other than ornaments for my Christmas tree. This year she made these two cuties, little bouncy snowmen. Thanks Carol for the many years of Santa, I always look forward to seeing what you have created for Christmas!
The past few holidays (birthdays, Christmas), I've asked for various kitchen items from my parents. This year they did not disappoint. I've been working on getting rid of my old, low budge knives, and switching them out for good quality knives. This Christmas my Mom and Dad helped me along in my quest to seem like an adult with these J.A. Henckels guys. A paring knife, and 8 everyday knives. And a Target gift card. Thanks Mom and Dad!!
Usually my favorite gifts of the year come from Chris and Mike. Chris does a bang up job picking out gifts. She'll go rogue every now and again, and it never disappoints. This year was no exception! Check out the sweet handmade flower pin! Love it! And awesome earrings from Fireworks, I love that store.
Earlier this month, Chris, Kim and I went to Urban Craft Uprising, which is, as described on the website, Seattle's largest indie craft show. Held the past two years at the Seattle Center. The past couple years Chris and I have used this craft show as a spring board to our Christmas shopping for eachother. We walk through the show together, taking note of what the other person likes, then split up and take on the show on our own, buying stuff for ourselves and eachother. It works out really well. This year I had my eye on this awesome scarf by Franken Scarf. I love their by-line....."Fire Bad, Scarf Good". I also got an awesome cookbook by Hungry Girl, can't wait to test out some guilt-free recipes!!
Okay, so my favorite gift of all this year is this necklace, made by MarKhed. I don't know if you can tell from the picture, but it is Seattle. And you know how I love this city. I can not wait to wear it.
So this year was a great year for gifts. But you know what? More importantly, 2009 was a great year for family, friends, pets, and the things that are really important in life. Possessions don't mean much compared to your family and friends. I thank my lucky stars everyday that I have my family.......

Deck the Halls!!
Happy Holidays!! The Thanksgiving / Christmas season is one of my favorite times of the year. I love sprucing up the house with decorations and lights. Last Saturday I took advantage of being home sick and decided to get my holiday decorations out. The wreath below is actually real, and it smells awesome. One of my co-workers was selling wreaths for a fundraiser for school so I scored this little guy for a mere $21. Money well spent!
The lighting isn't the greatest in this shot, but as you can see I tucked my pint size tree into the little nook in my living room. It fits the spot perfectly. I love getting out my Christmas ornaments each year. I have ornaments from throughout my entire life, as well as new ones that I've acquired in recent years.
Over the past few years, Casey, Kim, and I have painted homemade ornaments. The one below is from 2005, when my first feline love, Charlie, was still alive and well. The ornament is a saloon that I named "Charlie's"...... who knew that 6 months later he'd be gone. Breaks my heart still when I think about him, and makes me love my animals that much more. I'm getting a lump in my throat just writing this! I'm a softie, what can I say......
There is one of my homemade painted creations from last years session, a bright eyed penguin. The red shiny car in the shot was one of many ornament gifts from my Aunt Judy. Before she retired, she owned her own travel agency and whenever she traveled, she would always bring my sister and I an ornament. I probably have about 10 special ornaments from Aunt Judy.
This paper angel was found a couple years ago in a cute little Ballard boutique. That silver ball to the left is also an Aunt Judy ornament.
Along with the many ornaments from my childhood, and my ornaments from Aunt Judy, I have a couple other really special ornaments on the tree that are very simple, but really mean a lot to me. A shiny green Christmas ball that belonged to my Memere Far Far Away (my mom's mom that lived in New Brunswick, Canada), and a hen cookie cutter that belonged to my Memere on the Farm (my dad's mom that lived right next door to us in Marysville). They aren't the most spectacular looking ornaments on the tree, but it isn't about that, it is about the stories I remember when I look at them. And that is why I love the holiday season.
You know what else I love about the holidays? Christmas music! My place of employment has already started piping in the Christmas tunes non-stop and I love it! I've had one particular disc on repeat at home.....Elton John's Christmas Party. It is one of those discs they were selling at Starbucks one year. It has become one of my favorite Christmas albums of all time. Lots of non-traditional Christmas songs. Check out the line-up:
Elton John: Step Into Christmas
El Vez: Feliz Navidad
The Ronettes: Frosty the Snowman
Bruce Springsteen: Santa Claus Is Comin' to Town
The Beach Boys: The Man with All the Toys
The Flaming Lips: A Change at Christmas (Say It Isn't So)
Pet Shop Boys: It Doesn't Often Snow at Christmas
Rufus Wainwright: Spotlight on Christmas
The Ventures: Jingle Bell Rock
Chuck Berry: Run Rudolph Run
The Crystals: Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer
Outkast: Playa's Ball
Otis Redding: Merry Christmas Baby
Jimmy Buffett: Christmas Island
John Mayer: St. Patrick's Day
The Eagles: Please Come Home for Christmas
The Band: Christmas Must Be Tonight (one of my favorite Christmas songs EVER!!)
The Pretenders: 2000 Miles
Kate Bush: December Will Be Magic Again
U2: New Year's Day
Elton John and Joss Stone: Calling It Christmas
What are some of your favorite Christmas songs?

Cookie Night 2008
Like I said in a post below, for the past 5 or so years, Gina, Paula, and I have gotten together around the holidays at Gina's parent's house in the 'Ville to make and exchange Christmas cookies with eachother and Carol. This year we met up in the late afternoon, which was perfect timing. There was snow falling outside, Michael McDonald on the cd player, and a fire crackling in the background. Cookie Night 2008 was fixing to be the best year yet.
"What the heck is that thing?"....you are probably wondering to yourself. No, it is not a fancy waffle maker. Well, maybe it is. It is called a Krumkake maker, and Gina makes these Norwegian rolled up waffle cookies most years.
It always seems like it is going to be a pain in the ass to make them. The first few always seem to get ruined, but after a couple stinkers it seems to be smooth sailing.

Cookie Night 2008, continued.....
This year Paula made two batches of cookies..... white chocolate macadamia nut cookies, and oatmeal raisin (and I think cranberry?) cookies.
Malibu rum, Fresca, Christmas cookies, and snow falling outside.....the perfect afternoon for baking with your friends!
Mmmmmm......stack o' white chocolate macadamia nut cookies. Paula makes THE BEST cookies. I'm not sure what her secret is, all I know is that she has the magic cookie touch. She also makes a kick ass traditional chocolate chip cookie.

This year I wanted to make something a little different when we made cookies, so I tried a recipe my mom also made this year. It is really easy, and tasty.
Basically all you need is Snyder Pretzel Rods, a couple big Hershey bars, and whatever kind of candy or nut you would like to use as coating. I chose crushed candy canes, for the holidays. All you do is break the chocolate bar into the smaller square chunks and melt the chocolate in a mug in the microwave. Don't let the chocolate melt to the point where it is super runny or it will have a hard time making a nice thick coat on the pretzel. Coat the pretzel in chocolate by dipping it in the mug o' melted chocolate and twisting it around. Then roll the chocolate covered portion of the pretzel in the topping of your choice.
Let the pretzels dry on a cookie sheet covered in wax paper.
Voila! There you have it, a really simple way to make something a little different for the holidays.
Here is another recipe I made this year at Cookie Night 2008, also a recipe that originated from my mom.
Coconut Blueberry Cheesecake
For the crust:
1/2 cup butter
3/4 cup finely crushed graham crackers
1/2 cup all purpose flour
1/2 cup flaked coconut
1/2 cup ground pecans
1/4 cup sugar
-In a saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter until it is the color of light brown sugar, then set aside
-Mix graham cracker crumbs, flour, coconut, pecans and 1/4 cup sugar. Stir in melted butter and press in to 13x9x2'' baking pan
-Bake crust at 350 degrees for 8 to 10 minutes
For the filling:
1 & 1/2- 8oz packages softened cream cheese (12oz total)
2/3 cup sugar
4 eggs
1 tbsp brandy or milk
1 tsp vanilla
2 cups fresh blueberries
-In a bowl, mix the rest of the ingredients except the blueberries. Pour the mixture over the baked crust. Sprinkle the blueberries on top. Bake for 18 to 20 minutes.
-Cover and refrigerate.
Delicious!!
First Ebay Purchase Ever........
One of my most vivid memories from growing up is making Spritz cookies with my mom around the holidays. The last few years I have tossed around the idea of getting a Mirro cookie press, but whenever I would search for them online, all I would find were the newer plastic versions. I remember the one my mom had was aluminum, totally sturdy, the kind of sturdy that would probably survive a tumble down an elevator shaft. I figured I could find an old school cookie press on Ebay, and sure enough, I did!! $20.50 later, I have my very own vintage Mirro cookie press.
Here is a shot of my press with parts:
This is a picture of the Mirro cookie press my mom has (picture taken from Google images):
My mom's press has that same exact box, and nifty wooden tray to hold the pieces. I called my mom today for the recipe and she said that the price tag on her Mirro press said $3.25!! Granted, the thing is like 40 years old. It could be even older considering it was given to her by either my grandmother or my great aunt Grace.

We all end up making about two or three different kinds of cookies, and we end up leaving with so many Christmas cookies, it is unreal.
